Trouble with Ticks Ticks TICKS

 Trouble with Ticks Ticks TICKS

Eggs – no not Easter eggs, mosquito and tick eggs.   That is what the early warm weather is bringing with it.

The normal tick season is from May through August, but with the warmer temperatures in some areas, the ticks may get a jump on the season.  Eggs are already on the ground, but due to the temperatures they will be hatching earlier.  That means we will have more adults earlier in the season, which gives them additional time to breed and lay more eggs.

At Mosquito Squad our Barrier Spray kills adult mosquitoes AND ticks!  We also have Tick Tubes which are an additional tool to to protect your family.  Strategically placed tubes prompt field mice to incorporate tick-killing material in their bedding, effectively eliminating hundreds of nymphs in each mouse nest.

Taking preventive measures is your best course of action.

Call or e-mail us today for more information on protection options.

Spring is here – but it feels kinda like summer!

garden1 Spring is here but it feels kinda like summer!

If you’re like us, you’re out in the garden the first sign of warm weather.  Well Mother Nature got the jump on us this year.  Spring is feeling more and more like summer.  It is time to break out the spades sheers and shovels and get the yard and garden ready.  Here are a few quick tips for sprucing things up so you’re ahead of the game and can spend more time enjoy your yard this summer!

  • Clean out dead annuals
  • Cut back your shrubs, grasses and other perennials that may need it.
  • Start weeding early – It is much easier when the soil is moist from the spring rains
  • Divide and conquer – Splitting plants early is better for them, and easier on the eyes!  Splitting early gives the plants time to recover so they are beautiful for the summer months!
  • Depending on the type of rose, some need pruning of all leaves to wake up the plant to start growing again.
  • Tidy up your evergreens.
  • Fertilize!!

April showers bring may flowers – so remember to watch for areas of pooled water. These are the areas where mosquitoes lay their eggs.  Eliminating these areas stops those eggs from hatching and turning into stinging adults.

Mosquito Squad of Waukesha County is here for your mosquito and tick protection.  Give us a call for a quote and enjoy your time outdoors this summer!

Malaria No More

As mosquito experts, at Mosquito Squad we understand that mosquitoes can be deadly. They carry deadly diseases, the most prevalent being malaria. But, malaria is preventable and treatable.

Malaria was wiped out within the U.S. around 50 years ago. However, over 250 million Africans contract malaria each year, resulting in the death of over 2,000 children, most under the age of five, every single day.

It’s time for us to draw the line in the sand and say “let’s make malaria no more.

The mosquitoes that carry malaria are nocturnal, so a simple bed net helps save lives. A single $10 donation purchases a treated bed net that will help protect two children from malaria.

Mosquito Squad locations nationwide support Malaria No More through multiple fundraising efforts. Our goal is to help Malaria No More reach near zero malaria deaths in Africa by 2015, and to use every possible opportunity to inspire others to donate to help us achieve our goal.

Malaria No More leverages high-impact communications to engage the world, global advocacy to rally leadership and strategic investments to accelerate progress. They do so by partnering with companies and supporters like Mosquito Squad, American Idol, Exxon Mobil, HBO, FOX, Time Warner Inc. and others that help them raise funds and spread awareness.

Visit www.MalariaNoMore.org for more information or click here to make a donation online.

Your gift will help fund programs such as delivering life-saving mosquito nets to at-risk families in Africa and providing education and support for malaria prevention.

You can also donate the amount of your choice through the link above.

Thank you for caring enough to act.

Record year for Mosquitoes?

temp 150x150 Record year for Mosquitoes?Somebody pinch me –  last week we hit 80* – I mean come on, this is Wisconsin!   The temps, although slightly lower this week, are still higher than the average temps.  The weatherman are saying this “heatwave”  may continue into the summer.

As many have seen, with the warm weather comes the bugs – that’s  right,  this means insect eggs are hatching much earlier than usual, and they are looking for their next meal.

I came across an article and UW-Madison bug expert Phil Pellitteri says “it’s impossible to know whether this will be a “record” year for early bugs, but there’s no question, our unseasonably warm temps have activated creatures we usually don’t see for weeks.”

“If it continues to stay this warm, this will allow some insects to go through additional generations, so we could pay for it by the end of summer” said Pellitteri.

So what does that mean, it means the bugs have a green light and are getting a head start on the season.  In less than a month, a new generation of mosquitoes can go from an egg to a full-fledged adult that lives on to frustrate our leisure outdoor time. The early warm temperatures means the mosquitoes have a jump on the breeding cycle and that more mosquitoes out there laying additional eggs.  This could potentially lead to a huge increase in the number mosquitoes we see this summer.

At Mosquito Squad, we work to stop existing eggs from growing into adults.  This helps to stop those would be mosquitoes from becoming adults and laying more eggs.  Our traditional fogging takes care of the rest and helps protect your family from mosquitoes and ticks for 21 days.   Let us help you enjoy your time outside this summer.

5 T’s – Tips to help control mosquitos from taking over your yard.

While generally a nuisance, mosquitoes and ticks can carry dangerous diseases such as West Nile and Lyme disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 300,000 Americans have been sickened with West Nile Virus since it arrived in the U.S. 11 years ago.

We would like to offer these strategies to help you enjoy outdoor living with the following five tips for mosquito control:

1. TIP.

Reduce standing water to eliminate mosquito threats, including those in children’s sandboxes, wagons or plastic toys; underneath and around downspouts, in plant saucers and dog bowls. Other hot spots include tarps, gutters, and flat roofs.

2. TOSS.

Remove excess grass, leaves, firewood and clippings from yards.

3. TURN.

Turn over larger yard items that could hold water like children’s portable sandboxes or plastic toys.

4. REMOVE TARPS

If tarps stretched over firewood piles, boats or sports equipment aren’t taut, they’re holding water.

5. TREAT

Utilize a mosquito elimination barrier treatment around the home and yard. Using a barrier treatment at home reduces the need for using DEET-containing bug spray on the body. Mosquito Squad’s eliminates 85% to 90% of the mosquitoes and ticks on a property.
